The book is illustrated with artwork and photographs by Black photographers Hugh Bell (1927–2012) and Anthony Barboza (b. 1944). With selections by Langston Hughes (“Democracy” and “Mother to Son”); Ralph Ellison (“Mister Toussan”); LeRoi Jones [Imamu Amiri Baraka] (“Black Bourgeoisie” and “A Black Value System”); Eldridge Cleaver (“Malcolm X”); Martin Luther King, Jr. (“I Have a Dream”); Arna Bontemps (“A Note of Humility”); and Bayard Rustin (“The Failure of Black Separatism”).
