Roots: The Saga of an American Family became Roots the 1977 miniseries. Its effect upon the public imagination was profound. The television show was nominated for 37 Emmy Awards, winning 9 while its final episode remains the third-highest-Nielsen-rated episode for any type of television series, and the second-most watched overall series finale in U.S. television history.
