1925–1931 National Library Bindery Co. – Bookbinding Sales Manager’s Memorandum Book for Indianapolis Branch.
—
Bookbinding salesman’s memorandum book kept by Oscar Schnabel, manager and later president of the National Library Bindery Co. of Indianapolis, then part of a larger conglomerate with six binderies across the East and Midwest.
Extensive and alphabetically arranged, the book lists librarians’ names and addresses for public and college libraries, chiefly in Indiana but also in Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio. Regular clients included DePauw, Indiana University (Bloomington), Purdue, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, and Indiana University School of Medicine.
Entries detail sales calls for binding books, magazines, and newspapers: prices quoted, order dates, shipping costs, repair jobs, prospects for new work, staff changes, advertising efforts, samples shown, and follow-ups. Notes often mention “rubbings” or “rub offs”: pencil rubbings of spine titling on onion skin paper, eight examples present.
Ephemera includes two brochures: a 1925 “Schedule of Prices” for various binding formats (tipped in, two pieces) and a brochure for binding National Geographic Magazine volumes “at a Bargain.”
Founded in 1873 as Schnabel Bookbinding Company by German immigrant Christopher A. Schnabel, the firm passed to his son, Oscar Schnabel, in 1919, who expanded its operations. In 1925, the company joined Ohio Library Bindery Company, New England, and Empire to form the National Library Bindery Co. Oscar Schnabel served as president from 1927 to 1933. After the conglomerate dissolved, the Indiana branch continued as National Library Binding Company of Indiana, Inc., which still operates today.
