Pennsylvania Steel Company ... Philadelphia. Manufacturers of Steel Rails. Steel Billets, Blooms, and Forgings, Rail Road Frogs, Safety Switches, Rail Road Crossings, Car Replacers, &c. [trade catalog].

Trade catalog of steel rails and other steel rail fixtures manufactured by the Pennsylvania Steel Company in Baldwin Station, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Thirty-five full-page schematics show measured cross-sections and technical specifications of rail stock. Opposite each illustration is the name or, more typically, the names of the railroad companies or lines that used that particular rail.

A concluding section contains illustrations and descriptions of such rail fixtures as safety switches, several styles of rail “frogs” (common crossing track rails), angled steel rail crossings, car replacers (for rail cars that have gone off the tracks), and common stub switches. “Special work” is also offered. A useful table offers the ability to calculate rail tonnage, number of joint fastenings, fish plates (splice bars), bolts, cross-ties, and spikes per mile of track.

Wood engraved illustrations within show blast furnaces, blooming mills, and Bessemer mills. A frontispiece illustration shows a panoramic view of the company’s works at “Baldwin Station” along the Pennsylvania Railroad. Interestingly, the title page of this 1879 trade catalog bears a cancel indicating Baldwin Station’s name change to “Steelton,” a change effected in 1882.¹
