“Horses will roll cylinders with their feet and noses, fire guns…”

Three broadsides issued by Mahan Brothers’ Trained Animals of Charlton, Massachusetts for three separate performances of trained animals at the 1897 Vermont and New Hampshire Inter-State Fair.

The Mahans’ program of entertainment featured tricks performed five Patagonian Dogs—“only Dogs of this kind ever trained,” “Sultan,” the horse, and “Swiss Oxen, Champion Trick Cattle of the World.” The broadsides are accompanied by a circular letter from the Mahan Brothers touting the animals’ tricks and their association with the Orrin Brothers’ Circus in Mexico. None in in OCLC and likely unrecorded.
