“For God and Country…To uphold and defend the Constitution…and perpetuate a one hundred per cent Americanism”
Official illustrated program of the 1939 annual convention of the patriotic military veterans’ organization, The American Legion. Held in Chicago, the convention brochure by artist Joe E. Sewell depicts the iconic Chicago Water Tower, the city’s fabled skyscrapers, and a female heroic figure representing “Chicago” holding a staff with the city’s motto, “I will.”
Ephemera laid in includes a circular letter of welcome from the American Legion’s national commander, a brochure listing military unit reunion information (including reunions for women), and a brochure listing 13 industrial tours available to convention goers. The latter tours included visits to the Atlas, Peter Fox, Schlitz, and United States Brewing Companies.
Twelve pages of half tone views of Chicago depict convention hotels; street, river, and lake views; sports venues; churches; museums; and the city’s legendary stock yards. In remarkable condition.
