Issued in Vienna in 1889 by the St. Norbertus Buch- und Kunstdruckerei, this rare commemorative album documents the European houses and schools of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, a Roman Catholic teaching order founded to educate the poor. The German title reads Niederlassungen der armen Schulschwestern de Notre Dame diesseits des Oceans, translated as Establishments of the Poor School Sisters of Notre Dame on This Side of the Ocean. The subtitle commemorates the fiftieth profession jubilee of the order’s Superior General, Maria Margarita of Cortona Widemann, observed on April 17, 1889.

The album was produced in honor of Mother Widemann, born in 1814 in Günzburg, Bavaria, where much of the order’s early activity was concentrated. She entered the order soon after its founding and made her first religious profession in 1839, six years after the congregation was established.

The album contains 187 lithographic views, beginning with a full-page image of the motherhouse in Munich, followed by 186 smaller views depicting individual religious houses and schools. These include 146 institutions in Bavaria, along with examples from Prussia, Silesia, Austria, Hungary, and England.
