Captain Louis Sorcho. Great Deep-Sea Diver.
—
These two postcards showcase Capt. Louis Sorcho and burnish his reputation (perhaps self-proclaimed) as a “Champion Sea Diver of the World”. In one image, Sorcho is seen in full “submarine armor”. In another, he is seen in a quasi-military attire, festooned with gold medals.
A while back we catalogued a pamphlet highlighting Sorcho’s wife, also a deep sea diver. Of the duo we wrote: “The story of Frances and Captain Louis Sorcho is vague. Some speculate the couple were an entertainment act; there are documented performances at Coney Island and Sorcho had a traveling submarine act in support of the U.S. Navy during World War I. [It was further] claimed Louis recovered 132 bodies from the USS Maine after it sank, and that Captain Sorcho was a third-generation diver and commercial salvager.”
Two puzzle pieces.
