Pulp fiction novel based on Joseph Santley’s play Billy the Kid. The melodrama concerns the exploits of Western outlaw Billy the Kid (1859–1881) and is set in New Mexico Territory during the Lincoln County War.

Halftone plates from photographs include a frontispiece portrait of the playwright Joseph Santley (credited as one of the authors) and scenes from an actual production of the play including a scene in a Lincoln saloon, an actual horse onstage, and Billy professing love to a gun-toting Nellie.

The color illustrated wrapper cover evokes a situation of some drama: it depicts a solitary Billy the Kid on horseback in the desert looking warily behind himself.
