“A Picture of ‘Home Rule’ in Mississippi”

In 1877, several years after the end of Reconstruction in Mississippi, white citizens there went on a murderous rampage. They burned out the homes of and killed many African Americans. One illustration plate in the book depicts the horrific scene of an African-American being lynched while in the background another is tied to a tree and whipped.

After this incident, Republican judge William W. Chisolm, who was sympathetic to the plight of the victims, and two of his children were killed by a large mob believed to be the Ku Klux Klan. The book relates the details of all these horrors and of the murders of the “Chisolm martyrs” for which no one was ever prosecuted.
