Covers war matériel, politics, cotton and slavery, emancipation, and the “Impressment of Slaves for war Purposes.” Useful appendix gathers primary source documents. Charles H. Wesley was an historian, ordained A.M.E. minister, and the author of many books including Richard Allen, Apostle of Freedom (1935) and Negro Citizenship in the United States: The Fourteenth Amendment and the Negro-American, Its Concepts and Developments, 1868–1968 (1968). He was a graduate of Fisk University, served as president of Wilberforce University, and was both the Director of Research and Publications for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum in Philadelphia. Inscribed and signed on front endpaper: “To: John and Marion, with the cordial greetings and best wishes of their friend, Charles.” Small crease on spine, trifle binding soil and binding with a few other stray soil marks; very good.
