The French Colonial Question 1789-1791.
Important study of slavery, race, and revolution in French colonies
First edition of an early study by Mitchell Benett Garrett (1881–1959) on the political crises and racial dynamics confronting the French Constituent Assembly during the Revolution, particularly in its governance of the West Indian colonies. Drawing from his 1910 doctoral dissertation at Cornell, the author focuses on slavery, slave uprisings, and debates surrounding citizenship for free people of color. Special attention is given to Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic), and the career of revolutionary orator Antoine Barnave. Includes an annotated bibliography.
