Slave-Trading in the Old South. [1931 First Edition]

Described as the standard history of the domestic slave trade, Bancroft’s book was the “product of more than three decades of research [and] was the first scholarly treatment of the subject ... For years Bancroft had immersed himself in slave traders’ advertisements for bondsmen, city directories, slave ship manifests, letters, wills, and court records. He broke fresh historiographical ground by obtaining oral testimony from ex-slaves, slave traders and planters” (Smith: 1999, 33).
