To Road Builders. The County Commissioners for the County of Plymouth, will put out the making of the road lately laid out from near David Darling’s to Hanover meeting house, in Hanover, at Public Auction… [opening lines of 1847 Massachusetts broadside].

Hanover, Plymouth County, Massachusetts broadside putting public road work out to bid. The bidding involved seven lots and sought to develop almost 1½ miles of new road as well as the refurbishment and widening of two existing roads.

The 1847 broadside is signed in type by John B. Turner, Chairman of the Plymouth County Commissioners. To get the lowest price for the bidding, the commissioners made an attempt to get a single bid for the whole project: “They will dispose of it first in lots as hereafter described, and then all together, if it can be done for a less sum than in parts.”

Specifications for road foundations, grading, bridge work and causeways (where noted), stump removal, etc. are described in detail for each lot. References to specific locations of the work projects are typically the names of the landowners.

Winners of the contract(s) were required to post a bond. “The whole road and bridges to be made in a good and workmanlike manner, and to the acceptance of said Commissioners. To be completed on or before the 25th of December next.”
