[Ca. 1813 Manuscript Copy of Will of Timothy Edwards, Stockbridge, Massachusetts].

Of silver spoons and a “negro pond lot”

From silver, to bound books, pamphlets, to portraits and paintings; the manuscript will of Timothy Edwards (1738-1831) of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Edwards served as Indian Commissioner. In this role he corresponded several times with George Washington. The will is written out over three filled pages.

Timothy Edwards was the oldest son of Jonathan Edwards and the uncle and guardian of Aaron Burr. He served in the Continental Congress in 1778 and as a Berkshire County judge.

Other things Edwards willed were his “Beaver dam lot” in Chenango and his “negro pond lot” in Stockbridge. There are many other items, places, and names mentioned within. A dowager’s chest is willed to Edwards’ wife as well as silver spoons formerly given to his wife by her father. Jonathan Edwards, a son, is giving the father’s “wearing apparell” and it is noted Jonathan had recently “...removed from the westward, for the purpose of living me and taking care of my affairs. I do further give him liberty to use as much of the produce of my farm which is now on hand as may be necessary for the comfortable support of himself and such of his family as may live with me until he and they shall return home…”

Edwards also writes: “My mortal part I commit to the dust to be buried in a decent Christian manner and my immortal soul I cheerfully surrender to the body and righteous God who has fed and clothed me all my life, hoping through his sovereign mercy in Jesus Christ for a happy resurrection and union with the redeemer from among men.” Witnesses were Thad[eu]s. Pomeroy, Louis Dwight, Cyrus Byington.
