Autograph letter signed by author, abolitionist, and newspaper editor Theodore Dwight (1796–1866) seeking the recommendation of a clergyman for his Dwight’s American Magazine and Family Newspaper. Dwight hopes that with the help of New York State legislators his magazine will obtain recommendations “...to the School District Libraries of this state.”

“In 1833 Dwight joined his father in New York City and collaborated with him on the New York Daily Advertiser. He also continued working as a teacher and translator. His experiences on newspapers such as the Protestant Vindicator, the Family Visitor, the Christian Alliance, Israelite, Indeed, the New York Presbyterian, and the Youth’s Penny Paper provided him with the ability to edit and publish his own weekly miscellany, the American Penny Magazine and Family Newspaper (1845-1846) and its later incarnation, Dwight’s American Magazine (1847-1851). This weekly featured departments of general interest and was encyclopedic in its scope, offering articles on science, world affairs, poetry, word puzzles, and illustrations.” (ANB Online)
