Biography of Richard Allen (1760–1831), once-enslaved, the African American, preacher, hymn book publisher, founder and first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal church.
Charles H. Wesley (1891–1987), the author, was also an A.M.E. minister and a presiding elder of the church in the District of Columbia and part of Maryland. Wesley was “only the fourth African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard, following in the footsteps of W.E.B. Du Bois (1895), Carter G. Woodson (1912), and Alain Leroy Locke (1918).” (ANB) He was affiliated with Woodson’s Associated Publishers first published Wesley’s biography of Richard Allen in 1935.
Chapter headings in Allen’s biography include “The Free African Society,” “The Organization of African Methodism,” “The First Interstate Negro Organizer,” and “The Heritage of Allen.” With appendix of primary source texts plus a bibliography.
