One Dozen Tower’s Anti-Nervousness Penholders for Sale by Booksellers and Stationers Everywhere [ca. 1887 Boston trade card with pen box]
“More than Thirty Thousand Gross have been sold…”
An unusual Victorian American penmanship item, a trade card (identical text on both sides; 3¾ x 7¼ inches) laid into its illustrated box (worn, heavily scuffed; 4 x 7½ inches). The Cutter-Tower Company of Boston advertised their pen nib holder in rather curious language, and claiming “more than Thirty Thousand Gross have been sold.” An engraving shows a patent date of February 1888. An The American Stationer tidbit from September, 1888 describes the artifact as composed of wood and rubber and notes the manufacturer’s claim that its nib holder provided relief to writers whose fingers cramped when writing.
