First World War-Era Florida women’s display at the Hernando County, Florida Courthouse.

This unusual ca. 1918 photograph illustrates the home front contributions of Hernando County women to aid the war effort.

The image shows an elaborate, prominently positioned display of fruits and vegetables inside the county courthouse in Brooksville. A patriotically bunted table holds fresh fruit, glass jars of canned goods, and tin cans: corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, and tangerines, the town’s growing specialty.

Behind the display hang two posters by William Haskell Coffin promoting the sale of war savings stamps: “Joan of Arc Saved France—Women of America Save Your Country.”
