Born into a family of freed slaves in Texas, Scott Joplin was an accomplished pianist and American composer, widely considered to be the “King of Ragtime” for his distinctive style and contributions to the genre. “Maple Leaf Rag” was first published in 1899 and became one of his most popular and enduring compositions. It was one of the first ragtime pieces to be published as sheet music and is considered a classic of the genre.

This edition describes Joplin as the composer of “The Cascades”, “Sunflower Slow Drag” and “Elite Syncopations”. while showing an 1899 copyright, was actually published ca. 1910 per an illustrated and text-dense advertisement for James Scott’s “Ophelia Rag” —“Scott is the rag writer of the universe.
