April 1, 1896 souvenir tintype from a visit to the Sutro Baths in San Francisco, the world’s largest indoor swimming pool which had just opened three weeks earlier. The well-dressed young man poses in photographer William C. Billington’s studio in front of a backdrop of the Cliff House, a restaurant built in the château style located on the same grounds as the Sutro Baths. The baths and the restaurant were operated by Adolph Sutro, then mayor of San Francisco.
