Three c. 1930s Bimbo the Dog cartoon flip books, boyfriend of Betty Boop, Fleischer Studios.
Bimbo, a cartoon dog, made his screen debut in 1930 as the animated star of Fleischer Studios’ Hot Dog. Bimbo next played Betty Boop’s boyfriend in the popular Talkartoons series, produced from 1929 to 1932.
These three vertical flip or flick books depict six illustration series or separate moving vignettes (two to a book) that show Bimbo, and other frolicking dog-like cartoon characters, at play or engaged in such sports as boxing and baseball. Two of the vignettes employ racist caricatures.
The comical cartoon animations and the anthropomorphic characters evoke Bimbo’s big-screen antics. Here, in the palm of your hand, you can go to the movies.
