Anthony Melgrave. (Inscribed, First Edition)
Very scarce. First edition and inscribed: “To my friend Harry K. Thaw with heartfelt good wishes of the Author.” Described as the “Notorious Playboy of Old Allegheny,” Harry Kendall Thaw was the son of William Thaw, a wealthy Pittsburgh coal baron.
Anthony Melgrave is a romantic tale set in Virginia and Washington, D.C., describing a chain of events after a distinguished Spanish Catholic family emigrates to America. This is the only novel authored by M’Caleb (b. 1870) who edited The Louisiana Book: Selections from the Literature of the State (1894).
Various pencil annotations throughout the book may be in M’Caleb’s hands or they may be Thaw’s reading remarks.
