1873 Virginia ALS by Burr Powell Noland involving former Confederate General William H.F. Payne.


Former Confederate officer Burr Powell Noland (1818–1889) writes to William A. Brent, Esq. about a mistake on the acreage reported on a deed and the sale of land. Noland desires to “get the deed or copies from the record & have the error corrected.” He asks to meet Brent “at Manassas to examine the land” with “Tom Glascock who is interested in the Johnson or Middleton share.”

Noland informs Brent that “Genl. Payne”—attorney and former Confederate General William H.F. Payne—has written to him and desires a reply. Docketing initialed by Brent points to Genl. Payne’s involvement in acquiring the land: “Show this letter to Genl. Payne. I have no objection to him taking the Land at 2$ nett & be governed by the no. of acres deeded by the Court to Grand per Wm. A. B.”
