First edition. Collection of poems by New Jersey resident Bertha (née) Vreeland DeLazier. Most of DeLazier’s poems were written during the 1920s and 1930s.
This copy was owned by the author’s her great niece, Amy Rhinesmith. Rhinesmith annotated the book with genealogical notes and added this inscription: “This book given to me by my beloved mother Hettie Rhinesmith April 14, 1967 [signed] Amy Rhinesmith. Bertha DeLazier my Great Aunt Bert.” Other family members named here are Rhinesmith’s Great-Great Grandfather, Thomas DeMouth, and her grandmother, Effie Vanderbeck.
DeLazier lived in Passaic County most of her life and she was a descendent of seventeenth-century colonial settlers. She was married to Jacob DeLazier, a New Jersey Assemblyman from Passaic County. The book concludes with a patriotic speech on the American flag delivered by him in the Assembly in 1904.
