During the bicycle craze of the 1890s, a solicitation for canvassing agents to “earn a wheel” by selling vanilla flavoring and roasted coffee prepared by W.W. Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Women and men were invited to sell 144 bottles of vanilla (each bottle coming with one free pound of “White House Baking Powder”) or 200 lbs. of coffee. From those proceeds, the agent would receive “one of the celebrated Dr. Thomas Health Special Bicycles.” An illustration cut shows the cover of an 1897 Dr. Thomas bicycle brochure depicting a woman cyclist: “See how easy it rides!”
