Oddly-unnerving, overly-numerical, and oddly-specific

Heinecke’s book was first published in 1869 and then expanded 12 years later, with this edition. Contrary to its title, Heinecke’s “brief account” of his travels is, at 174 pages, not-so-brief.

A devout Believer, Heinecke put on the miles, criss-crossing back and forth through Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, D.C., Virginia, Tennessee, and Colorado.

This copy’s inscription puts a finer point on the details of this evangelist’s geographical wanderings, details that are oddly-unnerving and oddly-specific: “Alvin Frey’s Book. My Travels Since 1853, have been Ninety five Thousand Two hundred and forty miles (95,240), Preached 27,291 times [!!??] times. Aged 78 yrs 11 Mo. 16 dys [days]. December 6th, 1882. Reamstown, Lancaster Co., Penna. Samuel Heinecke.”

An important history of the United Brethren Church authored by an indefatigable servant of the Lord.
