The theatre performance of Betsey Brown was adapted from Ntozake Shange’s same-named novel. The story is set in 1959 in a Black St. Louis community. The plot focuses on the newly court-ordered integration of schools, and the ensuing social and cultural disruption. Shange contributed lyrics along with Emily Mann and Baikida Carroll who created the music. Ntozake Shange is known for her for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, a play comprising a series of poetic monologues set to music in which African-American women tell their stories of love, loss, domestic violence and empowerment.
