Benjamin Franklin. Präsident des Congresses zu Philadelphia, geb. zu Boston d. 17 Jan. 1706 gest d. 17 Apr. 1790.

Stipple engraving of Benjamin Franklin by signed by the engraver “C.F. Sprinck. sc. Dresden 1796” showing the statesman with his iconic glasses and coon skin hat. This portrait was based on Charles Nicolas Cochin’s 1777 image that was “probably the first likeness of Franklin taken after his arrival in France. It was certainly by far the most popular. The Canadian fur cap is worn in sturdy independence of fashionable usage, and the Doctor’s mouth, and the glance through his spectacles, carry out the idea.” (Sellers, Catalogue of the Society’s Exhibition of Portraits of Benjamin Franklin, 373)
