B. Franklin, L.L.D. F.R.S. Born at Boston in New England, Jan. 6th 1706. Died at Philadelphia, April 17, 1790.


Lettered around the top and bottom of the oval portrait are the words: “No. V] Massachusetts Magazine [Vol. II.” [AND:] “Eripuit cælo flume; sceptrumque Tyrannis.” [“He snatched the lightning from heaven, and the sceptre from tyrants.”] Based upon the portrait made by the royal Manufacture Nationale at Sèvres between 1778 to 1779.
