Rostros y Climas (Crónica de Viajes, Hombres y Sucesos de Nuestro Tiempo). [inscribed to his bibliographer]

Warmly inscribed by Carrera Andrade to his bibliographer, Dorothy E. Harth: “Para mi querida amiga Dorothy E. Harth cuya voz florece generosamente en mi desierto, poblado de ‘hombres vacios’. Muy afectuosamente, Jorge Carrera Andrade. Paris, 22 de Junio de 1955. 35, Rue de l’Aigle, La Garenne-Colombes (Seine) France.” (To my dear friend Dorothy E. Harth whose voice flourishes generously in my desert, peopled with empty men. Very affectionately, Jorge Carrera Andrade. Paris, June 22, 1955. 35, Rue de l’Aigle, La Garenne (Seine) France.)

This lauded Ecuadorian author “composed brief, imagistic poems noted for a sympathetic understanding of the human condition. He also translated the works of other writers into Spanish and adapted Japanese haiku into Spanish in a form called micrograma.” (Stony Brook University Libraries) In France and Spain, Carrera Andrade met other Latin American expatriates, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, and César Vallejo. His poems were anthologized and/or translated by Muna Lee, William Carlos Williams, Thomas Merton and others. Lee’s translation of his work Secret County (1946) significantly raised his stature in the United States.
