Inscribed and signed by Carrera Andrade to his bibliographer, Dorothy E. Harth “...en signo de sincera amistad.” This lauded Ecuadoran imagist poet is “universally recognized as one of the twentieth century’s most important Latin American poets.” (Jorge Carrera Andrade - Ecuadorian Literature online) In France and Spain, Carrera Andrade met other Latin American expatriates, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, and César Vallejo. His poems were anthologized and/or translated by Muna Lee, William Carlos Williams, Thomas Merton and others. Lee’s translation of his work Secret County (1946) significantly raised his stature in the United States.
Carrera Andrade’s Hombre Planetario was published in two parts between 1957 and 1959 and “it is considered one of the author’s fundamental works. Among the themes of the poem are the universality of experiences, loneliness, the need for peace, the pursuit of eternity and the dehumanization of human beings in modern societies.” (Wikipedia)
