Schoolmaster, poet, and Quaker Richard Shackleton (1726-1792) was the son of Abraham Shakleton (an ancestor of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton), a Quaker educator who in 1726 founded a boarding school for boys in the Quaker village of Ballitore, County Kildare, Ireland. Richard Shackleton succeeded his father as schoolmaster at Ballitore. Richard was a life-long friend of Irish statesman and British parliamentarian Edmund Burke (1729–1797) with whom he went to school both at Ballitore and at Trinity College in Dublin. Burke said of him that “‘No life was better … [or] more happily spent than his’.” (ODNB)

Richard’s second wife, Elizabeth Carleton Shackleton (1726–1804), along with her husband was a Quaker elder; neither served as Quaker ministers. The text includes letters by Richard Shackleton and a few by Elizabeth. This copy with an 1883 presentation inscription: “Debbie E. Cope with the love of her friend William Biddle.”
