[1931 Royal Air Force Letter by Future Air Chief Marshal Sir Kenneth Brian Boyd “Bing” Cross discussing His Early Aviation Training].
—
Letter by a young Royal Air Force trainee, Kenneth, likely Kenneth Brian Boyd Cross (1911–2003) who trained at the RAF depot at Uxbridge in 1930 before attending flight school at Grantham, Lincolnshire and earning his wings in April 1931. Cross served as a flight instructor becoming a squadron and wing commander in the Second World War. He later joined the Air Ministry, leading nuclear deterrent squadrons, and rising to the rank of Air Chief Marshal in 1961. Writing to his aunt, a 20-year-old Cross expresses a new enthusiasm for his chosen career: “I am working enormously hard these days and enjoying it thoroughly. Now that my probationary stage is over, the work improves a great deal on quality and variety and I no longer regret, as I did once, my desire of a profession.”
