Speech of Mr. Sprague, of Maine: Delivered in the Senate of the United States, 16th April, 1830, in reply to Messrs. White, McKinley, and Forsyth, upon the Subject of the Removal of the Indians.
—
“Sprague seriously attacks the efforts of removal of the Cherokee’s. Stating the treaties were made with them for their protection. He was not sure how they would subsist in a new and dangerous land. From 1785 to 1819 the United States negotiated 15 treaties with the Cherokee Indians.” (Jenkins)
