The Children in the Wood. An Affecting Tale.

Popularly known as the story of the Babes in the Wood, is the subject of an old ballad and oft-reprinted as a chapbook for children. The inheritance of two infants is usurped by their greedy uncle who hires two men to kill them. By the end of it, one of the would-be assassins is dead, the babes have perished (a robin covers them with leaves), the evil uncle is dead. (Oxford Companion to English Literature)  In the version of this scarce American edition, the children are rescued and live and the second hired-killer has been hanged. The rear illustrated wrap has the words “Oratorio” and “To Aid in Rebuilding Zion Church.”
