First American edition in its as-issued binding for Ganilh’s Systèmes d’économie politique (1809) translated from the French by D. Boileau.

The Wealth of Nations compelled many other political economists to respond to these dictums, often challenging Smith’s doctrine. Charles Ganilh, a French political economist whose work, An Inquiry into the Various Systems of Political Economy, was reprinted in America for the first time in 1812, applied a stringent mercantilist critique to Smith’s work, but his opposition in fact helped to further encourage interest in Smithian thinking.” (Cohen)

Ganilh’s work is noteworthy for presenting “perhaps the most elaborate analysis of free verse slave labour before British emancipation.” (Drescher)
