[1851 to 1856 Friendship Album kept by Catherine “Kate” Barnett of Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland].

Gifted to Catherine “Kate” Barnett (1832–?) from her cousin, T. Newton Kurtz, a Baltimore, bookseller and stationer and occasional publisher. Kurtz selected this album right from his bookshop: his commercial embossed blind stamp is on the front endpaper, just above his inscription to Cousin Kate, datelined 1851, Baltimore.

Kate Barnett was the daughter of Jacob Barnett (1781-1850) who married Elizabeth Miller (1787–1851) in 1809 in Washington, Maryland. The Barnetts lived in Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland. Kate’s album includes poetic sentiments and expressions of love from her family and friends.

The majority of the album’s inscribers identify as being from Boonsboro, Maryland, including three from the local South Mountain House hotel. Others identify as being from White Hall, Locust Grove, Bedford Springs, Baltimore, and Sylvan Grove. One individual simply writes “California.”

Contributors include Kate A. Latrobe and Mary S. Latrobe, Kate’s sister Matilda Barnett; a sibling or in-law, O.M.B. (“To Sister Kate”); her cousin Mollie Kate Miller; her cousin L.M.M.; her cousin O.E.S.; Martha R. Anderson; “Amicus”; Seibert; Julia; H; Clarence Linden; Annie;  Kate W.; Frank; Sue; Ella; Mary; Ella West; Joseph B. Nyman [an acrostic]; and Jeannette. Several sign only with their initials: E.S.B.; S.A.D.; L.B.V.; McH. G. and H.W.
