[1852–1854 Westtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania Friendship Album kept by Quaker Hannah James].
Sold with all faults. Disbound and very defective friendship album owned by Hannah Elizabeth James (1839–1915), kept by her possibly as a student at Westtown School, a co-educational Quaker boarding school near West Chester, Pennsylvania. James—here often addressed as “Hannie”—was the daughter of storekeeper and tanner Curtis James (1796–1856) and Lydia Harvey James (1813–1898) of Chester County. Among the poetical inscriptions within the album is one from Hannah’s sister, Lydia L. James of East Marlborough, and her uncle John S. James.
Other inscriptions (and nearby place names) within include: G.S. Cheyney (Thornbury); Anna E. Priest (Goshen); Mary Elizabeth Cheyney (Thornbury); M. Marshall (Westtown); J.D. Ashbridge (Thornbury); Laura M. Mearns; Rebecca Priest (Goshen); Lydia Levis; Samuel Cheyney; Charles D. M. Broomhall (Egmont); M.M. [likely M. Marshall] (Westtown); Elma H. James; Mary Rose Garrett (Egmont); Alice Cheyney (Thornbury); Mary J. Cheyney (Thornbury); Robert J. Walton (Philadelphia); Mary J. Priest (Goshen); Kate Cheyney (Thornbury); and Josephine D. Garrett (Edgmont).
