“Free Trade, Free Labor, Free Soil, Free Speech and Free Men”

The Utica Convention of 1848 resulted in the formation of the Free Soil Party who opposed the expansion of slavery into Western territories. The pamphlet reports the party’s platform, details the event, and excoriates the opposition, the “fanaticism of the slave-extensionists” and “Dough-faces” (p29). Martin van Buren and Lewis Cass accepted the Free Soil Party’s nomination. They were defeated in the general election by Zachary Taylor who had been nominated by the Whig party as their candidate for president.
