Bibliographically, Der Evangelische Besuch is a peculiar situation, a case where two distinct periodicals were published together and interpolated, as-issued:

“A German companion to The Gospel Visitor. First issued in April, 1852, it was discontinued in 1861 because of lack of support. It was most often published along with the current issue of The Gospel Visitor (within the same cover), although pagination of the two sections was distinct. Since the two periodicals did not always have the same contents, [it] should be considered a separate magazine.” —The Brethren Encyclopedia, v. 1, p. 460.

The lack of an enthusiastic readership for Der Evangelische Besuch was notable. The first number was issued in April 1852, but the second did not publish until December. The Gospel Visitor i.e., The Gospel-Visiter —and seen here also described as The Monthly Gospel Visiter—  was the first paper published for the German Baptist Brethren. “It was founded by Henry Kurtz, a German immigrant to the United States. In 1828 Kurtz was baptized a Brethren and two years later was called to the ministry. By the early 1830’s he had secured a printing press and begun publishing German periodicals . . . Kurtz’s concern to unify the increasingly scattered Brethren led to his launching a paper to serve the church.” (ibid) The rear wrapper advertises both publications.

Provenance: John Ziegler (1809–1898), Timberville, Rockingham County, Virginia. Like, Kurtz, Ziegler was also a “Dunkard (or) Dunker”. Because he was a pacifist, Ziegler’s barn was (unsuccessfully) fired by Union soldiers.

Kaylor: “Beginning in 1852 Kurz also published a companion paper in german, Der Evangelische Besuch. This was an effort to preserve something of the church’s Germanic past. But the supplemental edition lost money for him and was discontinued in 1861.  p192.” Out of the Wilderness, 1780-1980. The Brethren and Two Centuries of Life in Central Pennsylvania (1981).
