[1853 ALS by Augustus S. Porter, former U.S. Senator from Michigan and Mayor of Detroit, concerning Niagara Falls, New York Riverfront Land].

1853 letter concerning the rights of public use of or benefit from a small stretch of Niagara Riverfront land and a wharf by Augustus S. Porter, former U.S. Senator from Michigan and Mayor of Detroit, then living in retirement in Niagara Falls, New York.

Writing to Boston attorney Walter Bryant, a representative of an unspecified “company,” Porter declares: “What they shall reserve in exchange for the relinquishment of this ten rods [165 feet] to you, must be for the common benefit of every body.” He further asks “...what concessions you are willing to make, in return for this ten rods of public front relinquished wholly to you?”
