“The ‘Journal of Negro History,’ which Woodson edited until his death, served as the centerpiece of his research program” (ANB)

Fourth volume, complete, of the Journal of Negro History, published by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). The Journal was co-founded by Black bibliophile Jesse E. Moorland and Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” both men founders of Negro History Week, now celebrated as Black History Month. Authors seen in this volume include Carter G. Woodson, Roland Usher, W.H. Morse, Robert E. Park, and Monroe N. Work.

Black educator and historian Charles H. Wesley (1891–1987), whose copy this was and whose bookplate is within, here contributes an article entitled “The Employment of Negroes as Soldiers in the Confederate Army.” Wesley would later serve as Director of Research and Publications for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History which published the Journal of Negro History. Wesley was an author, historian, long-time Howard University professor, and President of Wilberforce University (HBCU). Wesley’s bookplate was designed by Black artist James A. Porter (1905–1970), the first husband of Wesley’s wife Dorothy Porter Wesley (1905–1995), librarian, bibliographer and curator at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University.
