Romaine: “Until proven wrong I shall name William Prince the first American seedsman who took advantage of the mail order business.”

A poor copy, defective (see below), of a rare trade catalog from William R. Prince & Co., founded c. 1793 in Flushing, New York by William R. Prince, Jr.

Known as Prince’s Linnaean Botanic Garden and Nurseries, Prince’s business was a collateral successor to his father’s nursery begun in 1737, the first significant commercial nursery in the United States. See ANB for further details on both men’s activities.

Within, the usual suspects make their appearances: cider apples; pears; cherries; plums; peaches; almonds; apricots; quinces; grapes; gooseberries; figs; magnolias; viburnums; firs; cypress; roses; junipers; rhododendron; clematis; peonies; azalea; moss; and dahlias. The “Color and Character” and “Remarks” columns contain excellent information.

Romaine p332 highlights this catalogue for Prince calling out on its title-page a New York lawyer who is either a competitor or a con (or perhaps both) who Prince warns the public is an imposter and a thief.
