[Harry S. Truman:] Come On, Movie-Goers Let’s Finish the Job! [Two Post-Second World War Movies-Themed Posters]

Two immediate post-WW II American movie theater posters advertising and promoting the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds during the early presidency of Harry S. Truman. The bonds were sold for the Eighth War Loan or “Victory” Loan campaign of October–December 1945. One poster even depicts a typed letter signed by President Truman on White House stationery:

I have been told about the plans being projected by the Motion Picture Industry in support of the Treasury’s Victory Loan. Knowing and appreciating what the theatres, the exchanges, the studios and Hollywood stars have dome throughout the war, I commend you for the enthusiasm with which your entire Industry is tackling this remaining big job.

This same poster advertises “Victory Loan Bonds on Sale Here” and depicts a view of the U.S. Capitol.

The second, more fleetingly-purposed poster announces “Today is National Free Movie Day.” Movie-goers were instructed how to get their free ticket: “Buy a Victory Loan Bond Here Today! See the Show! Free!”

Both posters were published by the “War Activities Committee—Motion Picture Industry In co-operation with the War Finance Committee of the United States Treasury Department.”

“The Eighth War Loan occurred between October 29, 1945 and December 8, 1945. The only drive without the stimulus of ongoing war, only the $9 billion quota of the First War Loan was less than that of the $11 billion Victory Loan quota. However, by the program’s end, over $21 billion had been raised, representing an achievement of 192% of the goal, the highest percentage of any war loan.”¹
