Letters and papers from the Livingston family of New York, prominent land owners and merchants. Among the names within are Peter R. Livingston, John Livingston, Henry W. Livingston, Henry Livingston, Esq., Walter T. Livingston, Thos. Farquson Livingston, Geo. C. Livingston, and Herman Livingston.

•  [New York, October 20, 1775]. [1]p. ALS by Peter R. Livingston to Jonathan Seymour, Esq. of Hartford, Connecticut. Bifolium with integral address leaf. Concerning the debt of “Mr. Philips” and references a “Mr. Samuel Judah of this City, Merchant who transacts my business for me.” This is likely patriot and Jewish-American Samuel Judah (1728–1781), “one of the signers of the decision to enforce the non-importation agreement against England in 1770.”¹

•  [Quebec, January 2, 1791]. [2½]pp. Period copy of an ALS by William Smith, annotated “A Copy from the Original in my possession—Peter R. Livingston.” Bifolium. Written to Peter R. Livingston(?), a dispute “between the Claremont [Clermont] and the elder branches of your family” and various legal matters including land boundaries.

•  [Livingston, Columbia County, New York, March 4, 1803]. [1]p. Partly printed indenture, completed in manuscript, between John Livingston and John P. Kilmer for the lease of a parcel of land in the manor of Livingston. Signed and sealed by both and signed and witnessed by Nicholas Kline, the surveyor. Folds; separations at several folds.

•  [Livingston, New York, April 22, 1805]. [2¼]pp. Articles of Agreement between Henry W. Livingston and James Waring in which Waring agrees to sell Livingston farm premises on land he leases from Livingston. Signed and sealed by Livingston and Waring and signed by witness John Shaver. With two later manuscript endorsements, 1806 and 1807, recording payments by Livingston of $250 and £107 to satisfy the debt in full. 

•  [Livingston, Columbia County, New York, May 1, 1805]. [1]p. Partly printed indenture, completed in manuscript, between John Livingston and Benjamin Brittain for the lease of a parcel of land in the manor of Livingston, signed and sealed by Livingston; not signed by Brittain nor witnessed. A manuscript addition notes: “Said Brittain is to build a framed house Twenty Two feet long and Eighteen feet wide, to board and shingle it.” Perhaps the document is not signed by Brittain as he had not fulfilled those additional requirements. Folds; separations at several folds with one panel at bottom loose and with some losses to a few words (but not sense) of text.

•  [Red Hook (Dutchess County, New York?), June 15, 1820]. [1]p. Manuscript Promissory Note signed by Giles Capron who agrees “to pay Genl. Henry Livingston or order Two hundred Seven 34/100 Dollars with Interest.” 

•  [New York, April 24, 1824]. [1]p. Partly printed Notice of a property assessment for extending a sewer issued against the estate of Henry Livingston for a property on William Street. Signed by N. Jarvis, Collector. Jarvis endorses verso to record the receiving a payment for the assessment. 

•  [Clermont {Clermont Manor}, New York, April 2, 1825]. [1]p. Manuscript receipt for the partial settlement of claims against the estate of Genl. Henry Livingston, signed by J.W.O. Brodhead on behalf of Thos. Brodhead & Co. A Walter T. Livingston is noted and a bond which Brodhead “signed together with [the] Manor of Livingston.”

•  [New York, December 22, 1825]. [1]p. Manuscript Statement of the Account of the estate of Henry Livingston Jr., debtor, with William Kemble, creditor.

•  [Livingston, New York, January 5, 1826]. [1]p. Autograph Letter Signed by Killens Miller to Henry Livington, Esquire of Claverack [Columbia County, New York]; the letter is free-franked by Miller as Postmaster. An accounting of the “Rects of monies paid by Giles Capron to Exrs. of Henry Livingston.”

•  [New York, September 1825]. [1]p. Partly printed Notice of a property assessment for crosswalks at the intersection of Whitehall and Water Street in Manhattan issued against Thos. Farquson Livingston [Thomas Farquharson Livingston?] for a property on Broadway. Signed by N. Jarvis, Collector. Jarvis endorses the verso to record the receiving payment for the assessment.

•  [Np, April 20, 1830]. [1]p. Manuscript Demand Note signed by G.B. Sperring requesting Henry W. Livingston Esq. to pay the bearer and “charge the same to me.” A later endorsement acknowledges “payment for the above order in full” signed on behalf of Geo. C. Livingston.

•  [Albany, New York, December 15, 1830]. [1]p. Partly printed Receipt issued to H.W. Livingston for six month subscription to the Daily Albany Argus newspaper. Signed by T.M. Bunt for Croswell & Van Benthuysen, Proprietors. 

•  [New York/Albany, April 31, 1842]. [1]p. Partly Printed receipt issued to H.W. Livingston for the shipment of freight on the “Steam-Boat Westchester.” Vignette illustration of a locomotive engine.

•  [Paris, May 6, 1842]. [1]p. Autograph Note Signed by H. Arends acknowledging receipt of 300 francs from “Mme. Livingston.” Text in French. 

•  [Paris, July 22, 1842]. [1]p. DuplicateManuscript Receipt signed by Jérome Picchione. A receipt for 2500 francs allocated to him by an arbitration judgment (“alloués par le jugement arbitral”). 

•  [Albany, New York?, c.1848–1849]. [2]pp. “Reply to answer of Defendant” (manuscript copy) submitted to the New York Supreme Court in the case “The People of the State of New York against Herman Livingston.” The Reply was made by Ambrose L. Jordan, Attorney General of New York. It details a title of possession of a tract of land in the Manor of Livingston. The document mentions Robert Livingston, John Livingston, Henry Livingston, and Walter Livingston.
