An Illinois railroad company’s growing interest in public utilities

This Illinois railroad was incorporated on August 9, 1904. Its immediate purpose was to operate a short-line railroad carrying passengers and freight from Springfield to East Springfield, Illinois. This collection encapsulates the significant activities of this interurban railroad in Illinois’ capital city.

The railroad was to operate “...into and through the County of Sangamon and adjoining and adjacent counties in the State of Illinois, and to purchase or lease and maintain and operate any railroad or railroads now or hereafter constructed or completed outside the State of New Jersey.”

Two notable documents are here: the railroad’s “Certificate of Incorporation” and a certified copy of the company’s articles of incorporation, issued by the State of Illinois, outlining the governance of the corporation, authorization and subscription of capital, stock-holder powers, etc. The amount of capital stock was $25,000.

Ten additional documents (copies certified in 1903, the year prior to the railroad’s incorporation) pertain to Illinois legislative acts and the incorporations of various railroad, street railway, horse railway, and electric/gas utility companies.

The original acts and corporate documents of these additional companies date from 1854 to 1890. They are likely predecessor entities to the new Springfield and Eastern Railroad or entities whose rights or capital they were assuming.

Found here, with original dates of enactment or dates of incorporation are the following:

•  An Act to Promote the Construction of Horse Railways in the City of Springfield (1861)
•  An Act Concerning the Capital Railway Company of Springfield (1867)
•  Citizens Street Railway and Improvement Company (two documents, 1879 and 1880)
•  People’s Electric Gas Motor and Horse Railway Company (two documents, 1889 and 1890)
•  Springfield Consolidated Railway Company (1893)
•  An Act to Incorporate the Springfield Gas Light Company (1854)
•  The Springfield Steam Supply and Electric Light Company (1881)
•  Springfield Electric Light and Power Company (1889)

With the rise of electricity as a source of motive power, the Springfield and Eastern Railroad had a growing interest in public utilities.
