Inspiring American patriotism among German-speaking immigrants

Unrecorded German-language pamphlet printing the letter of U.S. Secretary of State William L. Marcy concerning the 1853 Koszta Affair, a diplomatic incident involving the United States and the Austrian Empire. Marcy’s letter was in reply to a letter from the Austrian chargé d’affaires in Washington, D.C., Chevalier de Hulsemann, protesting the U.S.‘s intervention to protect Hungarian separatist Martin Koszta accused of being a traitor to the Austrian Empire and detained on an Austrian war ship.

Secretary Marcy’s letter defends America’s actions, arguing that Koszta, during a visit to the United Sates in 1852, had in effect become a naturalized U.S. citizen and so was due the protections afforded to any American unjustly imprisoned. Marcy’s decisive defense of American diplomatic efforts inspired “...the civilized world with respect for the American flag and the statesmanship of our countrymen, and completely [settled] the Koszta dispute. It established a principle which nations of the Old World will scarcely attempt to controvert.”¹ This Philadelphia German-language imprint was likely published to inspire American patriotism among German-speaking immigrants.
