Biography of Republican politician and U.S. Senator Benjamin Franklin “Bluff” Wade (1800–1878) of Ohio. As a member of the Radical Republican faction, Wade was an advocate for women’s and labor rights and a supporter of civil rights for African Americans. He opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 because it opened the West to slavery.
