National Anti-Slavery Standard. Without Concealment—Without Compromise.


February 25, 1847 issue of the National Anti-Slavery Standard, the official weekly newspaper of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Begun in 1840, the newspaper was initially edited by Lydia Maria Child and her husband David Lee Child. This issue was edited by Sydney Howard Gay (1814–1888), New York City journalist and abolitionist. Gay edited the National Anti-Slavery Standard for 14 years, during which time his office was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Articles in this issue under the heading “The Peculiar Institution” include “A Shocking Case in Charleston [South Carolina],” “Slavery Perils Freedom,” and “Cruelty.” One lengthy article, beginning on page 1 under the heading “Opinion” concerns the habeas corpus court case of the free Black man, Charles Lyons of St. Louis, “…charged with being a free negro living in this State without a license…,” and “‘An Act concerning free negroes and mulottoes,’ approved…1845.” and the constitutional issues surrounding the admission of Missouri to the Union in 1820 (5½ columns).

Other articles within include “Evangelical Alliance,” “Speech of Mr. Calhoun on the Wilmot Proviso,” and “Good News from Delaware!” Also seen are brief announcements from various regional anti-slavery societies and notices of anti-slavery lectures.

Three poems are published within and there are two serial stories, one concluding and one beginning viz., respectively: “Toussaint: An Historical Romance” from the German of Theodore Mügge and “Le Blanc; or the Slave’s Lesson. A Tale of Louisiana” by Chares Hooton, Esq.
